I got second place!!

A friend rang me to ask had I seen that I had won second place in the Australian Sheep and Wool Show - in the Woolcraft section, tapestry weaving.  It was the first year of having a tapestry weaving section. I have posted about the piece I made and am very excited to have won second place!!

That was a phone call I was very happy to receive!!

I haven't found many links to it yet but here is one that shows a lot of the woolcraft pieces. Because I changed my mind about the design as I was weaving, I had a bit of a decision about which way up to hang it. I did make a decision but I see that the piece has been placed in such a way that it doesn't actually matter.

I went with the first one: I thought I could see dusk through a valley with sunset in the distance. And it is in the orientation that I wove it.

This one could have been sunset also, with the darkening sky coming down.

The point of the exercise was going to be about how background colours affect how we see colours. The rectangle of blue seems to be slightly different according to the colours surrounding it. The theme was Vision, a continuation of the 2020 theme, seeing that the show didn't get to be on last year either.  It was sad that the whole event was cancelled, and at such short notice. Lots of people have put in so much work to put the event on. Life is very unpredictable in these Covid times.

Trying new idea

I saw the date and that inspired me to post: 14/7/21. Divisible by 7 (in case you didn't know!)

I made some cut-out little grevillea pieces a while ago and then couldn't decide what to do with them. My original idea was based on an article I saw in a New Zealand quilting magazine years ago. But I didn't read it properly and my pieces were not going to work as well. So I put it aside.

Then I was going through notes from workshops I did. I found one folder from an Olga Walters workshop that I did at the Embroiderers Guild, Victoria (Australia). Also years ago.

So I have come up with a little pouch, possibly a phone bag. I didn't really think about how to put it together, I was just seeing if I could make one. Now I have to decide how to make it fasten.

The grevillea flower fits quite well on the back. It doesn't go so well on the front so I am leaving that for the moment.

I was at the Alcove Art Shop on Monday and saw a couple of other phone bags and am thinking to try different ways to fasten it which may allow me to have my little grevillea pieces on front and back.

I'll have a play around with some more ideas over the next week or so.

I'm not the only one.

I just saw this article, about seeing faces in inanimate object and how we can react to them.

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/jul/07/so-happy-to-see-you-our-brains-respond-emotionally-to-faces-we-find-in-inanimate-objects-study-reveals

I often see faces when out walking, in tree trunks, leaves, on buildings, etc. If you want to see past ones, try putting in FACES in the search part. But there are others. Too many to put in links.

I went to a nearby park today and saw several faces, mostly of dogs - it is a dog friendly park.

I transferred the photos from my phone to the computer and couldn't see them as easily. I had to go back to the phone to find them - I think they are easier to see when small. But I will post them anyway.

There is a face in profile here, plus a couple of other animal faces above it.
Definitely a dog-friendly park.

This one has a dog's face and its front legs. Well, that's what I saw. But looking at it now, all I see is the face of the dog.

Not sure whether this is a human, alien or animal face. But there is definitely a face! If not a few.

The date might inspire me.

Today's date: 3/7/21. At least something interests me at the moment.

Actually, there is plenty to interest me at the moment, we have a puppy!! She is taking up a lot of time and energy but we are smiling so much more.

I have been working on a small quilt (based on the Silver Princess tree in our garden). I am about to put on the borders. I wanted to get matching fabric for the edges but the shop I got the background at didn't have any of the same fabric left. They had others with similar patterns, slightly different tones in the colours. I decided I didn't care, I would use the bits that were relatively close. I wanted them for the side borders, I had enough left over for the top and bottom. I probably had enough of the right fabric for the sides but I wanted the pattern to be in the same direction. So I had to choose, correct colour and wrong direction or correct direction and wrong colour. I chose wrong colour.

It isn't horrendously different. Also, the sewing has produced some quite wrinkly parts, so I don't think a slightly wrong colour is going to be the stand-out feature. I am happy I have finished it though - well, almost finished, I still have to hand sew the backs of the borders.
